Call for Participation
NO Parade
Saturday, May 5, 2007
12 noon to 2 pm
As part of the Version 07 festival
WHAT:
The NO Parade is a sidewalk parade. At the same time it is an anti-parade, an anti-spectacle — in other words, it is no parade.
Participation in the NO Parade is open to anyone who is interested. Rather than a large gathering of people in one place marching together in the street, the NO parade consists of individuals (or perhaps small groups of two or three) who will walk/march along the sidewalk on the same day and at the same time but in different areas of the city. This parade is simultaneously collective and individual, apparent and unnoticeable, one whole and many disparate parts. This parade can take place at the same time anywhere in the world.
WHERE:
Participants will decide where they wish to march in the parade. They may choose to walk around the same block for a prescribed length of time or walk from a specific beginning point to a destination. They may choose their location according to convenience or with a specific purpose in mind relating to the word NO.
WHEN:
Participants will march for at least half an hour and at most two hours on Saturday, May 5, from noon to 2 pm
NO STUFF:
Participants will carry or wear some object/item that has the word NO printed or written on it (a small flag, a button, a t-shirt, a hat).
We will provide some small NO items (buttons, flags, business cards) available for pickup on Saturday, April 28, 2007 from noon to 3 pm at 415 W. North Avenue (Jenny Roberts, ring bottom bell).
In addition, participants will be free to create their own versions of NO. For instance, they may:
Make a small sidewalk NO float in a wagon or child’s stroller
Make a NO costume
Make something to carry that has to do with the word NO
Twirl a NO baton
Engage in some other performative action of their choice relating to the word NO
If you intend to participate, please:
Notify us (Jenny Roberts at jenrobe@earthlink.net or Vesna Grbovic at vgrbovic@mac.com) about the length of time you will participate as well as the route you will take (we will create a list of participants and their routes and post it on this website).
Document your march with two or three photographs (taken by a passerby or friend), and e-mail them to us (we will then compile the photographs into an archive/record and give a copy (on CD-R) to any participant who wants it).
We welcome your participation!
If you have any questions, please e-mail Jenny Roberts at jenrobe@earthlink.net or Vesna Grbovic at vgrbovic@mac.com
